August 2019
Well this is fun...
We came back from a holiday and I was suddenly having curious symptoms:
These were very similar to the symptoms I had in 2011 (when my CIDP journey started)! I gave it just over a week and then went to the doctor. He examined me and said the cough wasn't the usual type, but he didn't think I had an infection. As I was supposed to have a recheck of my Barratts he wrote a letter to a Gastro consultant (Dr Ellis) who I saw 8 years ago (there is a recurring theme here!).
I was booked to see him privately on Tuesday at 16:40. The Bank Holiday weekend was terrible as I was getting worse. On Tuesday I went with my wife to the private hospital. We had to wait half an hour to see Dr Ellis and in that time of sitting there I was feeling hotter and fainter .... I nearly passed out in the waiting area!
When he examined me and I explained about the symptoms. he decided that this was "Complicated" and the best place for me to be was Hospital as an in-patient, so they could run various scans etc more quickly. Dr Ellis recommended a CT-Scan plus a number of others to get to the bottom of things. He believed it was nothing to do with my Barratts.
I was admitted to hospital early Wednesday morning and went to their medical assessment unit (MAU/AMU). There, eventually, a junior doctor examined me (very thoroughly) and asked lots of questions. I was then sent for a Chest X-Ray. Finally about 8 hours after arriving a senior consultant talked to me and it appears I had pneumonia, but they were also concerned about the complications.
A drip was inserted to keep up my fluid intake and I was given Amoxicillin as antibiotics. At around 17:30 two Neurologists turned up and performed more tests and I answered more questions, they went away a bit concerned, but I didn't know what they thought.
Just as I thought I was going to spend the night in AMU (which is chaotic and very noisy) I was moved to a Respiratory ward. I had a room to myself (I presume they didn't want me spreading my germs to anyone else)!
